EPA to Raise GHG Emissions Threshold
2010-02-23Washington (CERR) Feb. 23, 2010 – U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Lisa Jackson said her agency expects to substantially raise the threshold of annual greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions that would require large emitters to obtain fresh permits.
In September, EPA announced that facilities that emitted more than 25,000 tons/year of GHG would have to obtain permits by demonstrating they are using best practices and technologies to minimize emissions.
Jackson said in a response to a letter from eight Democratic senators that the agency was expecting to raise the threshold to reflect input provided during the public comment process.
Additionally, Jackson went on to say that no facility would be required to address GHG emissions before 2011.
For the first half of next year, only facilities that already must apply for Clean Air Act (CAA) permits due to their non-GHG emissions, will need to address GHG emissions in permit applications.
EPA does not intend to subject smaller facilities to CAA permitting for GHG emissions before 2016.
